“Interprofessional education occurs when students from two or more professions learn about, from and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes.” From: Framework for Action on Interprofessional Education & Collaborative Practice (WHO/HRH/HPN/10.3).
In this context, “interprofessional” refers to engagement with professionals outside of public health (e.g., architects, nurses, doctors, educators), rather than to engage with individuals from other public health disciplines (e.g., biostatisticians, health promotion specialists).
The CEPH competency is that all MPH students must “Perform effectively on interprofessional teams.”
MEZCOPH supports interprofessional education (IPE) and the activities at the UA Health Sciences (UAHS). It also recognized that we will include IPE in our curricula so graduates will be able to work effectively in interprofessional teams. The activities and assessment of IPE outcomes will be provided in the following manner.
Degree Requirement
All MPH students must participate in at least 2 interprofessional education activities as part of their studies in the MPH program and provide a critical self-assessment for each activity in which they participated. This critical self-assessment is meant for the student to give a thorough evaluation of the event, their participation in it, and how the activities of the event furthered their skills working on an interprofessional team.
For each activity the student completes, they must submit the IPE Self-Assessment form on the Hub. A faculty member must review their IPE event submission and self-assessment. This faculty member is the students MPH Faculty Mentor.
If the student has questions whether the event they participated in is considered interprofessional and could count for this degree requirement, they should speak with their Faculty Mentor early to discuss the extent of participation learning with and from people in other disciplines.
Before participating in your first IPE events, all students must read the following two articles in preparation:
Approved IPE Activities
Tucson/Phoenix Campus Students
Each MPH student must participate in at least two (2) IPE activities while a student in the program.
We encourage participation in one or more UAHS sponsored IPE events hosted by the University of Arizona Center for Transformative Interprofessional Healthcare (CTIPH). Examples of UAHS sponsored IPE events include the Pandemic Exercise, Disability Exercise, Addressing Obesity Using a Weight Inclusive Model, CLARION Competition and additional UAHS exercises that may be created in the future. These will be advertised by the MPH Coordinators via e-mail and may also be listed on the CTIPH website: https://ctiph.uahs.arizona.edu/
If the student completes a UAHS sponsored IPE activity, they must upload their UAHS IPE Certificate of Completion document with the completion of their self-assessment on the Hub submission form. This indicates that all pre/during/post event activities have been completed in addition to attending the event.
Examples of allowable IPE activities may include:
- UAHS IPE events
- Service Learning
- Mobile Clinic
- Independent Study
- In Class Activity
- Internet-based IPE activity
- Other appropriate activity approved by their faculty mentor
*Above activities must include participants from other non-public health disciplines in order to be considered.
For any non-UAHS IPE event attended, if you received a certificate/verification of completion from the event, you must upload it.
